Dude Tapas.. I completely agree with you. I had problem with my Dell power adapter a few days back when it refused to charge my laptop. I called up the Dell guys, and this particular guy named Jeffin personally followed up and saw to it that the problem was resolved. Moreover, within 2 days of calling them, a new adapter was waiting at my doorstep! I even went to the extent of telling them that I never had such HIGH expectations of customer service from them. Right on! This is what after-sales service is all about!

BTW, Dominos sucks! I mean their pizzas.

Hey Paranoid Freaks

Firstly, it is scientifically proven fact that 92% of people who are scared to pay online, generally have an account balance which is less than 10% of thier monthly salary.

96% of These same people have credit cards which are already over-spent.

So I canot understand what the big deal is about.
I mean the internet & online shopping has been around for the last 10 years.

Have some faith in the people who put up respectable sites like selling books.

I can understand doubt if you were buying contraband or mp3 or porn.
But hey, its books !

Get online, and Buy. Now !

Awesome stuff. Just the way a online store should be.

One very under-developed resource in Indian online stores, is local content for books like reviews. Even while visiting brick and mortar stores, I try to look up reviews of books on amazon on my cell (apart from actually flipping through the books :) ). However, regardless of how great Amazon's content is, the requirement of books are different in different countries. IT professionals in India sometimes have different priorities for book reviews ("Would this give me any help in my certification?"), and for this local content is essential.

One idea that you might have also thought about, is to encourage visitors to write reviews for books they liked, possibly with nice inducements. ;)

I pretty much agree with what Jiju said, he truly has the bystander reflected. It does help to know that you have a office in Kormangala, which is more a placebo than anything else. But I do find myself surfing Flipkart, 'looking' to buy a book, than Amazon, where I just try to read review.
Maybe I just want you guys to win, have a startup soft corner :), but the local content is what makes you the Amazon of India. Or Rediff/Times Books, where I try to make excuses of why not to buy.

There is this particular book called "Wonderland of Investment" very popular in NIndia, never available in any of the local stores, and you had it. So "think global, be local" drew me. There are certain certification books that I purchased, and they were out of stock in all the local bookstores (and your site). But you did notify me, and that makes it all the more easier.
But I dont think your service is actually that great.(Maybe I brush it out easily because I understand how startups work). Nobody picks the call, You gave me a wrong book, and the second order was delayed.
The website, though is excellent, it gave me a google preview of another book I purchased, and reading it, actually made me buy it. More of such previews please..

Good going Tapas,

I am impressed. A friend of mine recommended your website for a particular book, the book is out of stock but I placed orders for some other books anyways.

There was some hassle in validating credit card and I left an angry mail for your support guys. I feel sorry now after learning there are humans running this website.

In our hostel, it has been a long time since we are purchasing the books from Flipkart. Reasons being quite simple :
1) Discounted rates
2)No shipping charges
3)Prompt delivery.
I won't say this sets apart Flipkart completely from other online bookstores. For instance, I have also being purchasing books from Landmarkonthenet.com since long time. Good things about it were :
1) Lower rates (yeah, Landmarkonthenet's rates are lower than Flipkart, but then they used to add that Rs. 30 shipping charges making it Rs. 10-15 costlier than Flipkart). Fortunately, they have scrapped the shipping charges till August 31. And i must admit, though i appreciate Flipkart, Landmark here wins the game. It too has good service and prompt delivery. It just lacked over price front, but it is now winning over it.

As a well wisher of Flipkart, i suggest you to look into this matter.

Loved the writeup. I agree, the delhi office is right in the middle of the busiest commonbody (word?) of Delhi. I had a tough time getting in to the office to meet Binny, and then got fined while getting out because I didn't take a token or some such thing. Ironically to get to the token outlet you should pass the security barrier that checks you for the token.

Great link too.

Now I am a happy customer @flipkart reading through one of the rare to find books. I posted my last comment at 3:00 PM and at 3:30 PM there was a mail from flipkart refunding the money and cancelling the order.

When I thought that everything is over, Tapas @flipkart had called that night and apologized for the delay and told that they have already ordered an imported version for me . That should have cost more than what I have paid for it. But flipkart not only accepted the mistake with them but also took responsibility for it.

I appreciate the effort and the attitude you displayed in this case but I have a suggestion too. If there is any delay in processing the book let that be known to the customer.

I'll consider this as the best place for positive feedback.

Recently, I've noticed flikart starting to showup in the first few lines of google search results. Maybe this was the first viable alternative to rediff shopping.

This is when I was told (by a friend) that flipkart has very decent delivery target and usually ships in 3 days.

So as an avid book reader and who loves simple e-com websites, I decided to test flipkart. I searched for my book (freakonomics) and promptly ordered it online. This was on Midnight of 25th. I also twittered about it at that time.

Imagine my shock (pleasant surprise) when the book was in my hands within 48hrs. You guys are awesome!

Please continue keeping the website simple and great, looking forward to a excellent online experience on your website - reader reviews, ratings, buying patterns.

A few suggestions from my end:

1. More filters to refine search results like binding type, publisher, price range, etc.
2. Auto suggestion feature for the search box.
3. Wishlist bulk editing with option to buy or remove items. Also, I would like to see the discounted price for a book along with it's original list price.
4. Please reduce the number of tag clouds, do we really need these many?

Keep up the good work.

Did you test if the payment gateways work with Firefox on Linux ? For the past couple of purchases I have had to use non Firefox browsers to transform the conclude the purchase workflow. And, I still would love to have the wishlists share-able and, getting to know what other books were bought in relation to the book I am purchasing ("our other users, also bought .... along side this book"). Some day you might consider aligning with sites like goodreads.com too :)

I like the look and feel even though there is still screen real estate wasted. And, do get a twitter or identi.ca ID so as to keep notifications and a conversation going.

Hmmm, there is a lot going on in that page. I really wish there were some clever usage of colors to make it clear on which parts of the page are actually related to the book that I am looking at right now, differentiating it from the other blocks.

I do wish Flipkart had a wish list section too, so I can bookmark books that I want to buy/read in future :)

Also, how about notifications on new books by my favorite authors, etc.?

And how about auto-suggest in the search..

... I think I'll stop now.

My thoughts:

1) I like it.
2) In the homepage, I'd like to see the top new releases on top! The 'Most Popular Subjects' section can go down :)
3) Could you please make the book reviews prominent in the site? They aren't highlighted much!

Just my two cents. Take it or not, I really love Flipkart. I haven't had a better shopping experience with any other online store in India. You rock!

Thanks for the plethora of payment options!

I'm a big fan of Gaping Void. But Daiyam! it's expensive :)

So you guys starting up a comic/webcomic section on Flipkart? I run an Indian webcomic and might be coming up with an anthology in the future. Will check in with you then...

I wonder if this analogy is true --

You can Be where the other person is,
BUT
Can you Be what the other person is ?

:-)

We are a different person when we are writing more than 160 characters.
[ Hint: a Tweet ] :-)

frankly, I was a bit confused to see the title of the post as I got the pingback on my blog...

Flipkart really continues to deliver from the day one I had used... I have made quite a number of orders and was almost satisfied with every order...

I have told many of my friends and they actually are using your service. What I like the most is - almost every time I get the book very next day if I order it before noon.

actually, I came to know about flipkart through a comment left by one of the Bansals on my previous blog. At that exact time, I was desperately looking to buy this book, http://leavingmicrosoftbook.com/ , and miraculously I found the book on flipkart. That book was very difficult to find elsewhere.

Really, I never knew my order meant so much. It makes me happy now to read this post. As a web developer and designer myself, I was impressed with the usability and UI of the website at the very first visit. That was one of the reasons I trusted the site. If the UI was crap, probably I would not have made the order and that means all the subsequent orders too from me and from the people I have referred. I think this is the key take away for any new e-commerce start-ups reading this post. Make sure the UI is simple, elegant and easy to use.

I never knew anyone at flipkart before making my first order. I know there will be few people who are not satisfied with your service and that always is the case with any business. We make few mistakes in the process of learning and we lose few customers. Even I was not satisfied with one particular order but you guys quickly replaced the book.

guys, its really good to see this kind of stuff written... I would have delighted the same way even if you have written about someone else... really I myself know what it means to get the contract/trust from the customers and the joy we get in selling the stuff to the first customer...

all the best and keep up the good work!
