Bombay Off The Blocks

Which Is Why We Came To Mumbai

A good one week after we kickstarted operations in Mumbai, I can now safely say “We’ve arrived.”

On account of writers’ block, I will plagiarise a conversation I earlier had. Please do expect things out-of-context.

It’s the city I grew up in, feels odd to be living in a hotel. Postpartum depression, is what I think it can be called. But my biological clock has trained to get me off the train, etc. A model didn’t stab me, but I did juggle lipsticks for one. Her makeup guy was freaking out. I was, am, territorial though. Intense arguments with two other non-Bombayites about why things are the way they are, Order and chaos.

“Every city has a sex and an age which have nothing to do with demography. Rome is feminine. So is Odessa. London is a teenager, an urchin, and, in this, hasn’t changed since the time of Dickens. Paris, I believe, is a man in his twenties in love with an older woman.” - John Berger

Bombay is the manwhore. Will do anything with anyone for any sum. It’s 39 years old. An age where it’s hard to accept that you’re no longer young, and an age no one considers as old. A midlife crisis of sorts. It is in fact 33 years old, but looks 39 because of the lifestyle it leads.

“Too old for rock n’ roll, too young to die.”
